999.001 Nordica Pattern Cut Glass Oval Tray

by Carol Parks

The oval tray shown in figure 1 is ACGA Collection Inventory #999.001.  The Nordica pattern, cut by Blackmer, is pictured in the reprint of the A. L. Blackmer Co., Inc. Rich Cut Glass, New Bedford, Mass., 1906-1907 catalog.

The tray measures 11 1/2 “ long x 7” wide x 2 3/4” tall.  The blank is cut in four round vesicas cut in three rows of hobnail with 24 point hobstars in the center of each vesica with eight point hobstars separating the top of each vesica. The center of the tray is cut in a 20 point hobstar with four sets of fans around the hobstar.  There are four smaller hobstars cut around the rim between the vesicas.  The rim of the tray is scalloped.

The pattern listed in the index of the Blackmer catalog is spelled ‘Nortica.’  However, it apparently is a typo error as it is spelled “Nordica” under the four shapes shown in the catalog.  This pattern is shown on page 17 in a 14” punch bowl; page 15 in a 12” deep oval bowl; page 7 in a 9” and 10” bowl and on page 34 in a 15” ice cream tray – the same shape as Figure 1.

It appears Blackmer left no clear area to be cut.  This pattern would be an asset to any cut glass collection.
