998.033 Carnegie Pattern Salad Bowl by Pitkin & Brooks

by Gerry LaCroix

The Carnegie salad bowl by Pitkin & Brooks (P&B) measures 3 inches high by 8 inches in diameter and is unsigned.  It was donated to the ACGA Collection in 1997.  Fig. 1 provides a top view of the bowl.  The pattern has a general swirl motif of 32-point hobstars surrounded by strings of cut vesicas, rays and hob diamonds.

Side views of the bowl are shown in Figs. 2a and 2b.

From Fig. 2b, we see that the design also includes three 16-point rayed stars, each about to be engulfed by a “clam-like” combination of two cut vesicas encompassing four rays.

Fig. 3 depicts the bowl as advertised in the P&B 1909 catalog.  Apparently, the bowl was only available in the 8-inch diameter size.  It was priced at $10.00.

Another P&B catalog, reputed to be from 1907, shows the same bowl priced at $12.50.  This higher price, at an earlier date, is counterintuitive.  All things being equal, one would expect prices to increase over time, not decrease.

The Carnegie pattern was also produced on a nappy and a saucer as shown in Figs. 4a and 4b.
