Rarities in the ACGA Collection:

998.035 Waverly Pattern Plate by Libbey

by Gerry LaCroix

The plate shown in Figure 1 is ACGA Collection inventory #998.035.  It measures 7 inches in diameter and was cut in the Waverly pattern by Libbey around 1900.  It was donated to the ACGA collection in September 1997.

  Figure1.

The pattern depicts a ring of hobstars interspersed with 5-point stars and fans.  The center of the plate consists of a hexagon surrounding a 6-point star with fans emanating from the tips of the hexagon.

The plate is signed with the following Libbey signature:

The Waverly pattern was also produced as a three-handled loving cup (and advertised in “McClure’s” in December 1901), a punch bowl with matching punch cups, and a jug.

Several companies (e.g., Bergen , Blackmer, Buffalo , Krantz and Smith, and Maple City ) produced a Waverly pattern.  However, these differ from Libbey’s Waverly, as well as from one another.

The following documents contain information and illustrations of the Libbey and non-Libbey Waverly patterns:
