2002.218  Cut Glass & Silver Shaving Mug Set

From the ACGA Collection

The  shaving mug shown in Figure 1 was used to hold lathered soap or shaving cream.  The silver-handled brush was used to apply the lather prior to shaving.  This set including its original presentation box was donated to the ACGA Collection in 2002.  The set was displayed at the Cupples House in St. Louis during the summer of 2004.

Eighteen vertical notched prisms are cut  up the bulbous body of this mug  The slightly flared sterling silver mug rim is worked with a bottom garland of stylized blossoms.  A lather bar or brush rest spans the rim opposite the handle.  The flat base is cut in a rayed star.  The mug handle is uncut.

The mug is about 3 1/4" in diameter and  3 1/2" tall.  The satin-lined gift box is box 5 1/2" square.

Contact Walter Poeth (530-873-6608) or Leon Torline (620-227-8154) for information about adding cut glass to the ACGA Collection.  If you can provide additional information about this piece or would like to help catalog pieces in the ACGA collection, contact Ken Howe,  (859) 331 - 8954, kenhowe@fuse.net.
