Bowl Cut
in the
Rochester
Pattern by Fry
By
Verle
Davison
The bowl pictured in Figure 1
was cut in the
Rochester
pattern by Fry. It was donated to
the ACGA Collection in 1998.
Four vesicas, formed by a continuous mitre cut,
delineate an equal number of scallops on the bowl’s edge, each cut with 13
teeth and separated by four additional scallops, each cut with 9 teeth.
Two bars of cane cross at the bottom of the bowl and end at the center
tooth of each vesica. Each
quarter section, formed by the crossed bars, is further divided by two bars of
cane crossing at the bottom of the bowl and terminating at one end of a double
vesica which extends to the center tooth of a lesser scallop and has its center
cut in strawberry diamond. A small
mitre cut extends outward on either side of the junction of the double vesica
and its caned bar. Three caned
bars, crossing the ends of each of the two major bars and terminating at the
intersection with a mitre cut, divide each major scallop into six equal
sections, each of which contains a rayed fan.
Each section at the bottom of the bowl, formed by the crossed bars,
contains a rayed fan.
The bowl measures 4 ¾ inches
high by 10 ¼ inches in diameter.
