2003.106 Alpine Pattern Punch Bowl by Hawkes
by Gerry LaCroix
The Alpine (one-piece) punch bowl by Hawkes measures 6 inches high by 12 inches in diameter and is unsigned. It was donated to the ACGA Collection in 2003.
As shown in Figs. 1a and 1b, the pattern consists of two parallel chains of 16-point hobstars separated by a chain of crossed vesicas. The cutting in each chain is duplicated 8 times as the chain circumscribes the bowl. The base of the bowl is marked by a larger 8-point rayed star.

According to Spillman (ref. 1, p.42 and p. 192), the Alpine pattern was in production as early as 1896, and appeared in a Hawkes catalog ca. 1900 as portrayed in Fig. 2. There it is identified as a 12-inch deep bowl on shape 346 with a cost of $30.
Another illustration (see Fig. 3) of the Alpine pattern may be found in ref. 2, p. 129 in the form of an 8-inch diameter bowl. The pattern in this bowl depicts the chains as consisting of what appears to be 10 links vs. the 8 links for the bowl in the ACGA collection.
