Hoare Eleanor Pattern Ice Bowl 998.029

The impressive ice bowl shown in Figure 1 was cut in the Eleanor pattern by J. Hoare & Co, and was donated to the ACGA Collection in 1998. On this wonderfully bright blank, the Eleanor pattern is integrated by four long ribbons of cane that cross at the bottom, forming four caned Gothic arches. The large bottom octagon is cut with a 32-point hobstar, having a flat starred button.

Figure 1 is a side view of the ice bucket, showing one of the cane arches. A rayed star decorates the arch peak, and the kite-shaped area within the arch has an 18-point hobstar.

There are sixteen toothed scallops on the flared rim of this ice bucket.  Arch tips are beneath every other scallop, and 24-point hobstars are cut between the tops of the arches.

Between the caned arches there are smaller arches.  Figure 2. shows a close-up of the central tusk and crosscutting decorations used in the smaller arches.

No Hoare signature has yet been found on this piece. The same ice bucket (or perhaps a smaller version) is pictured on p. 31 of the turquoise-cover 1997 ACGA Hoare catalog reprint, as the “9630 ice bowl 8 inch.”  The pieces in this section of the catalog were probably produced circa 1906-1910.

The ACGA Eleanor ice bowl is 6 1/2" tall, and weighs 8 lbs. 7.4oz.  The flared rim has an outer diameter of 10". Depth from maximum rim height to bottom of the bowl inside is 6 1/4”. The metal of this high quality blank exhibits a bright crisp blue-white color.

Published images and surviving pieces indicate that Hoare cut the Eleanor pattern onto many forms.  Table 1. Lists some of these items.
