2002.219 Cut Glass Bowl by Quaker City and Fry

by

Judy Ratcliffe

The bowl, catalogue number 2002.219 was cut in the Columbia pattern by Quaker City Cut Glass Co., Philadelphia, PA., circa 1909, and was donated to the ACGA collection in 2002. This pattern was also probably cut by the H. C. Fry Glass Co. circa 1901-1905, unknown pattern name.

The pattern is essentially a quadrangle, each section separated by vesicas. Within each section is a cluster consisting of six small hobstars. The arrangement of hobstars is that of one on top of the cluster, two on either side and one on the bottom completing the figure. The center of the cluster is a figure of a six point star created by the miters of the cluster.

The four corner vesicas are outlined in beading which enclose a smaller vesica of crosshatching or file as some call it. The bottom of the bowl consist of a well done twenty four point hobstar.  This is a well cut and balanced pattern, pleasing to the eye and over all creating an eight part blossom effect.

Dimensions are 9 inches wide and four inches deep.
